Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to promote activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama.
