Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to promote activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage inside the house that belonged to a member of jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
